San Antonio's Loop 1604 and Potranco groundbreaking

On September 12, 2016, a ground breaking ceremony was held to commemorate the beginning of the extension of San Antonio’s Loop 1604 and Potranco project. Representatives from the city, county and state including Vic Boyer, VIA Metropolitan Transit, Mario Jorge, Texas Department of Transportation and Bruce Bugg, Texas Transportation Commissioner attended the event.

David Zachry, president and CEO, joined Zachry employees in a ceremonial dirt dig to officially kickoff the project.

PROJECT FACTS:

This extension is being done with two separate segments. Segment 1, running from Culebra to Potranco roads, will start October 2016 and wrap up mid-2019. Segment 2, picking up at Potranco and running through Loop 1604, starts early 2017 and will wrap up in 2021. Drivers will see improvements to their commute incrementally as work progresses with TxDOT dedicated to providing new highway features as they are completed.

The final product will feature two non-tolled express lanes in each direction with overpasses at Wiseman, West Military, Potranco and Marbach. A bridge over Loop 1604 will be built for the intersection of Dove Canyon/Falcon Wolf. Continuous frontage roads will facilitate local traffic along this corridor, with traffic signals and turnarounds at each overpass and bridge. Ramps will be configured in the “X” configuration, getting intersection queues onto the frontage roads to promote smooth traffic flow on the main lanes. Finally, a new direct connector from southbound Loop 1604 to eastbound US 90 will be constructed. Adding these main lanes and frontage road improvements should dramatically improve commute times for those living along this rapidly growing corridor.
