Zachry Construction Corporation secured a $78 million contract with the Texas Department of Transportation to upgrade U.S. Route 281 to improve the 5.4 miles of highway north and south of Premont, TX, and redirect U.S. 281 to circumvent the town. The work began in April 2020 and  consists of building 10 bridges, four 12-foot main lanes, and 10-foot outside shoulders. The project also includes the construction of a new wastewater Lift Station to replace the existing Lift Station which is located in conflict with the new alignment. This project will cause minimal disruption to the homes and businesses of Premont and will serve to relieve traffic congestion in the town, provide safer travel, and promote economic development in the area during construction.
